Gary Gerth has been a resident of Shelter Island for the past 45 Years. He is a member of the American Legion, Our Lady of the Isle Church and worked with the youth program at St. Gabriels. He holds an Associates Degree in Management Marketing from Nassau Community College, a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Hofstra University and a Masters in Divinity from Rutgers University (at St. Johns University).
Gary served on active duty as an Officer in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969 and then a combination of active and reserve service, retiring in 2002 with the rank of Commander. Subsequently, he held a number of public service positions including Executive Assistant to the Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead, Principal Legislative advisor to Presiding Supervisor of the Nassau County, and director of the Long Island Veterans Service Agency (which assisted veterans in their claims for benefits).
In addition, Gary has been Chairman of of the Nassau County Police Indemnification Review Board, the Board of Directors of the Nassau Fire Academy, the Advisory Committee on Firematics, the Advisory Committee on Veterans, the Advisory Committee on the Physically Challenged, and the Advisory Committee on Senior Citizens. He also served on the Nassau County Emergency Preparedness Committee, the Long Island Regional Planning Board and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Association
